Love Arosa. It is a lovely little ski village. It was nice to finally see the sun so we sat out on the balcony. Today the big thing was the horse races in the snow. After that we went to the Kursaal casino and had Fondue Maison - Bread, Swiss cheese and Kirsch. Didn’t really like it much. We’ve been living on bread and cheese and even the fanciest fondue is just bread and cheese!

Drove to Lucerne and played tourist there. Saw the old mill covered bridge and the Dance of Death murals on the Lions Monument. After Lucerne we drove back to Zurich to see the Rapperswil at the opposite end of the lake from Zurich. There we stayed under the bleachers of an ice hockey stadium Just a wee bit chilly. Zurich is built on the hillsides and from every place there is a lovely view. Right off the main Bahnhofstrasse are many tiny narrow streets to explore. Today we went to see a movie expecting to see Cary Grant and Doris Day speak German. Very disappointed. It was in English with German and French subtitles!!! Came home and had scrambled eggs for dinner. Drove from Erlangen to Zurich. First stopped in Wintethur so we could stay in the Schloss there. Found that there was no heat and they said Zurich was better. So we drove on to Zurich. The drive from Erlangen was just lovely. We passed very interesting towns like Schaffhausen along the way but we couldn't stop. We had to get to Zurich before the Herberge closed. Got up and packed the car. So sad to leave Kitzbuhel. Drove to Munchen and, without too much trouble, got our money from the insurance company. Drove to Erlangen to leave our stuff with Jeannine and parked our car around the corner so we could stay in the Jugenherberg. Skied the Horn again today. Since we knew the slope it was much easier and, since it snowed all day yesterday, the snow was very good and we are getting much better. Went to town and bought a blumen for our family. They cooked a delicious dinner for us – knodel, bacon and kraut. We even got to eat in their kitchen instead of the breakfast room. We washed our dishes and talked to them in German for an hour or so. Then we went into town to the Greif Keller. Zell am See The sun was out and we set off for Zell am See. But we were told the road over the Grossglockner was closed, so we had to take a car train. Once off the train, we started up the mountain and broke a chain. Judy and Pat had to stand on the rear bumper so Louie could climb the hill. We rode all the way to the top and all the way to the bottom like that, then the other chain broke and wrapped around the axle. We finally got to Zell am See and found an excellent youth hostel, had a shower and washed our hair. Tomorrow we will deal with the chain. |
A daily diary of a journey in 1962. Please post comments about where you were then on the Background page.
1962 was pivotal. This is the background:
It was a year colored by the Cuban Missile Crisis, an escalating involvement in Vietnam, the Berlin Wall and the Cold War with Russia, Civil Rights issues, a nascent space program, Nelson Mandela in prison, Betty Friedan's, The Feminist Mystique, the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the death of Marilyn Monroe.
